Yellow Submarine; Psychedelic Art
A series of Yellow Submarine posters are available at online stores. Its artwork is very a taste of psychedelic, describing imaginary floating world of unreality. The graphic of the album cover is beautiful and mysterious, seems to be inspired from pictorial art of the Middle East, India, China and the Eastern area.
Have you noticed that, the painting includes no strait lines in its composition at all? It contains only undulating and delicate lines, as if it were of sophisticated picture books. Its color combination is also elegant, which cannot be seen in former Western pictorial art. Flood of such brilliant colors as red, purple, yellow and green is rich and exhilarating.
Those posters would fit the wall as a cute interior. And, for the picture looks like a world of imaginary fairy tale, children would also love it.
Art Director Heinz Edelmann
The art concept of Yellow Submarine, including character designing, was created by Heinz Edelmann, a German multifaceted graphic designer and illustrator. Yellow Submarine became his outstanding work, and his art direction caused huge influence on pop culture of that age, as an expression of psychedelic art of that era. In addition, the method of animation including floating typography has strongly impacted in later promotional video played in MTV.
To understand Heinz Edelmann’s philosophy and artistic approach toward Yellow Submarine, this interview transcript can be the great resource, in which he mentions untold stories about how the work had been designed and produced.
The key of psychedelic art is the feeling of floating and swirling, embodying the image of pink elephant caused by drugs which have hallucinogenic effects. The artistic movement occurred in 1960s is inspired by motif of Indian, Hindi and Eastern culture; a strong cross-cultural appeal.
