Rubber Soul – The Turning Point for The Beatles?

Rubber Soul album cover poster

If you love the Beatles' album Rubber Soul released in December 1965 in UK, I recommend you to get the poster and put it on your wall.

As you know, it is the famous album artwork image. The vivid title lettering, designed by Charles Front, is charming and impressive, which typographical design remembers us the early psychedelic movement in art. As an aside, the color of the logo is dependent on the published version of each record label; Parlophone Records used bright orange, while Capitol Records used chocolate brown in later period.

Vivid Album Artwork by Robert Freeman

The photograph was taken by a photographer Robert Freeman, who created several cover photos for The Beatles especially in the middle of 1960's.

Why don't you focus attention on the atmosphere of the photograph?

Observing it carefully, you'll find it is stretched. This artistic approach was said to be created by accident. It just happened that the Beatles members saw projected images were “stretched”, and they liked it, wanted to innovate a way to “stretch” their own portrait for their album cover. It must be outburst of their artistic enthusiasm, trying hard to break away from their stereotyped public image as “innocent pop idle”. As you see in the cover photo, they are slightly smiling, look confident and representing a clear challenge to conservative show business.

A New Dawn for John Lennon and Paul McCartney

Produced by George Martin, the album Rubber Soul is said to have completed whole recordings just in four weeks, in order to release before Christmas season (What a tough project!)
As a result, a masterpiece was created, full of musical wealth, challenges and diversity. The album contains many beautiful songs such as Norwegian Wood, Michelle and In My Life. Inspired by poetic song writing of Bob Dylan and other mature artists, it was the time when John and Paul began exploring their own music concept, as great musical composers.
